From
his outside pole starting position Jackie Boggs of Grayson, KY driving
the McDonalds / Miller Brothers Coal / Hawkeye Trucking / Richard A.
Mitchell Motorsports / Cropper Racing Engines sponsored Steve Swartz
Chassis Monte Carlo led all 50 laps of the World of Outlaws Late Model
Series 2004 Smoker Friendly 50 at the West Virginia Motor Speedway to
claim the $7,000 feature prize.
At
the drop of the initial green pole sitter Tim McCreadie in the #39
Sweeteners Plus / A-C Speedworld / Texaco Havoline / Rocket Chassis
Chevrolet Monte Carlo got the jump on Boggs and led going down the back
straight, but Boggs motored around McCreadie in turns three and four to
lead the first lap. But before the lap could be completed 15th starting
Rod Conley, hit the turn three wall bringing out the first of eight
cautions. Conley was the first retiree with extensive right rear damage
to the #71R.
They
were lined up again, double-file with Boggs on the pole and McCreadie
outside pole. At the drop of the green Boggs never gave McCreadie a
chance as he took off and never looked back. He began building his lead
by several car lengths on every lap and on lap four when the next
caution came out, he had almost a straight lead over McCreadie, Darrel
Lanigan, Steve Francis and Robbie Blair.
On
lap four the red flag flew when Tim Hitt was turned sideways in the
middle of the pack coming off turn four at the start of the front
straight. Before it was over Patrick Sheltra, Billy Moyer, Donnie Moran,
Chuck Harper, John Blankenship, Rick Eckert, Corey Conley and Dale
McDowell were all involved with the track completely blocked. Conley and
McDowell retired to the pits with extensive damage while all the others
continued. While this wreck was being cleaned up Mike Balzano pulled up
with radiator damage, he also retired. At this point Boggs led McCreadie,
Francis, Lanigan and Blair.
When
the green flew Boggs jumped to an immediate lead and every lap increased
it by five or six car lengths. During this time the only action was back
in the field as both 17th starting Bart Hartman and 19th starting Donnie
Moran who were charging hard, had entered the top 10.
The
next yellow flew on lap 19 when John Blankenship in the #23 Busch Beer /
Allstar Performance / Hoosier Tire Ford Taurus stopped in turn four. He
went to the infield before returning to the tail of the field. At this
point Boggs relinquished a half track lead to McCreadie and Francis.
Just
as the field got up to speed, Keith Barbara spun in turn 1 bringing out
the fourth caution of the night. In the two laps since the last caution,
Moran moved from ninth to seventh. McCreadie still led Francis, but
Francis and his #15 Valvoline / Mopar / Freeport Recycle Center / Action
Auto Mart / Rocket Chassis Dodge Intrepid was putting on the heat as
McCreadie seemed to be fading.
At
the next green, Boggs jumped to a big lead charging hard to increase it
with every lap. However, Boggs’ momentum was again slowed on lap 24 when
Rick Eckert slowed with a flat right rear on the #24 Raye Vest
Excavating / J&J Steel / Hoosier Tire / Afco Race Products / Cornett
Race Engines / Rocket Chassis Ford Taurus. Eckert returned to the action
on the rear. Francis had just gotten by McCreadie for second and the top
three running order was scored now as Boggs, Francis and McCreadie.
The
field went green with Boggs again building a huge lead when on lap 30
Steve Shaver, who was running in the top 10, stopped in turn four with
rear suspension problems and retired to the pits. At the same time,
Darrel Lanigan also pulled his #29 Lanigan Autosports / Accutex Signs /
Cornett / AFCO / GottaRace / Hoosier Tire / Rocket Chassis Ford Taurus
pit side. At this time both Moran and Hartman had moved into the top
five with Boggs leading followed by Francis, Hartman, McCreadie and
Moran.
Only
three more laps until the yellow flew again when McCreadie in fourth,
slowed in turn two and went pit side, ending a fine night. This now
moved Chub Frank in the #1* Lester Buildings / Corry Rubber/Allstar
Performance / Nystrom's Auto Sales / Draime Racing Engines / Rocket
Chassis / Pierotti Motorsports / Slavic Custom T-Shirts / Farr
MotorSports / Corry Laser Chevrolet Monte Carlo to fifth with Moran
fourth.
During this green period both Hartman and Moran worked by Francis, but
on lap 41 Moran brought out the yellow with a flat that ended his great
run from 19th. Dan Schlieper who had been hanging around the top ten all
night now moved his #9 Miller Brothers Coal / Hawkeye Trucking / Pro
Power / Rayburn Chevrolet Monte Carlo into the top five.
Now
Boggs faced his only serious challenge of the entire evening. When the
green flew, Hartman dove under Boggs going into turn one but couldn’t
keep up his momentum in turn two. Boggs got the edge, jumped back into
the lead going down the backstretch and Hartman could never get close
enough to challenge for the lead over the final laps. Hartman stayed
closer than anyone else had for the entire evening but he wasn’t close
enough. Boggs took the checkered flag with a comfortable lead of eight
car lengths over Hartman, Francis, Frank and Dan Schlieper.
