The World of Outlaw Late Model Series made their second stop of the 2004
season at the fast, high bank Fulton Speedway oval where series points
leader Scott Bloomquist in the #0 Miller Brothers Coal / Hawkeye
Trucking / Custom Race Engines / Allstar Performance / Hoosier Tire /
Sweet Manufacturing Ford Taurus was Looking to make it two in a row on
the famed 3/8ths mile.
Tim McCreadie in the #39 Sweeteners Plus / A-C Speedworld / Texaco
Havoline / Rocket Chassis Chevrolet Monte Carlo and local DIRT modified
hot-shoe Billy Decker would have liked to spoil Bloomquist plans for the
huge $25,000 payday. "We ran well here the last time and I think we can
use some of that info to our benefit. But, back then it was a lot warmer
than it is now. Every time we run with these guys we learn something, so
being here at a track I have run well at with the Modified maybe it will
be our night",
Tim McCreadie said. "I love running here and these cars are so much fun,
but different than anything I have driven in the past. We'll take the
info from our last run here and the other info we've acquired and put it
all together and just maybe it will come together for us", Billy Decker
said.
Steve Francis in the #15 Valvoline / Mopar / Freeport Recycle Center /
Action Auto Mart / Rocket Chassis Dodge Intrepid who sits second in
points coming into the event just nine points behind Bloomquist is
looking for big things at Fulton. "Not that I wish bad luck on anyone,
especially Scott, but I'd like lady luck on our side by the end of the
feature. We have had some great runs and some bad runs, so we are
probably where we deserve to be. The last time here we missed the set up
big time and the 16th place finish showed it. We have learned more since
then, so good things could happen tonight", Francis said. "I don't know
what to expect tonight. We seem to have a grasp on things, but who
knows. The weather will be a big factor in the track condition, so we'll
have to dig deep into the nights and compare a something close to this
Fulton oval. I love the track and really happy we were able to come back
again this year," commented WoOLMS 3rd place points sitter Rick Eckert.
In Time Trials Bart on a Hartman surprised the crowd with a lap of
16.272 on a cool, slick race surface. "It was a good enough lap I guess.
It wasn't a great lap, but it got us on the pole. We didn't have a great
race the last time here, so maybe we can better that tonight and get us
a win," Hartman said.
In the Late Model Dash Bart Hartman, Darrell Lanigan, Scott Bloomquist
and Dale McDowell did battle in the four lap shoot out, each looking for
the extra pay check. Hartman took command early, but Bloomquist shot
from the outside of row two to the inside looking for an opening around
Hartman. Bloomquist conquered his feat and held on for the win.
In the main event Scott Bloomquist and Darrell Lanigan would bring the
24 starters to the green. Steve Francis was going to have a little work
to do if he was going to get the win or the points lead, as he went away
in the 8th spot. At the green it appeared Bloomquist missed a gear as
Lanigan pulled his Lanigan Autosports / Accutex Signs / Cornett / AFCO /
GottaRace / Hoosier Tire / Rocket Chassis Ford Taurus away from the
outside. A drag race occurred down the back stretch, but Lanigan held on
and ducked down low. On lap four Dan Schlieper in the #9 Miller Brothers
Coal / Hawkeye Trucking / Pro Power / Rayburn Chevrolet Monte Carlo went
down low and bumped Lanigan, causing Lanigan to check up and giving the
lead to Schlieper. Bloomquist who initially got shuffled back followed
Schlieper and settled in for the second spot.
On lap 25 Steve Francis made his way into the top five as he got by both
Bart Hartman (fourth) and Dale McDowell (fifth) to take the third
position. Francis now set his sights on Scott Bloomquist who was running
in the runner up spot. It appeared that Bloomquist possibly had a tire
go down as the rear of the zero just wasn't sticking to the bottom of
the racing surface anymore. The first caution flew on lap 32 for debris
on the front stretch. At the restart Schlieper checked high opening the
bottom for Bloomquist, but he also checked up, so third place runner
Steve Francis took advantage and the runner up spot from Bloomquist. On
the next lap Dale McDowell also got around Bloomquist as he again
checked up leaving the bottom unprotected. With five to go Chub Frank
got by moved into the top five as he got by McCreadie and Bloomquist for
the fourth position. Bloomquist would settle for fifth. At the line,
without feeling any pressure, Dan Schlieper would conquer the 3/8ths
high banks of Fulton to collect his first win of the 2004 season and
also his biggest payday ever. "Wow what a rocket I had here tonight. We
have tried all year to get here and we finally made it. The guy's have
worked so hard on this thing never giving up, it's just a great win for
the whole team," Schlieper said.
